All Day, All Night, What Da OOTD?

I think we’ve all had on of those weekends where you feel like you need a weekend afterwards to recover. This Saturday I had to forgo my usual lie in to get up at 8 to go get my hair cut then run around London like a crazy person seeing friends and getting things organised before my trip to Berlin this week. I knew I would be on my feet all day so I wore my air max nikes which are truly like walking on air!

Jumper  – whistles (old), Trousers – American Apparel, Bag – Urban Outfitters (old), Trainers – Nike, Sunglasses – Spektre.

I didn’t have much time to get change before meeting friends for drinks and dins so I threw on a little black cami & changed my shoes. I didn’t have time to re-do any make-up so I just powdered my existing over what I already had on and threw on a red lip. I then shoved the essentials into my mulberry lily and I was ready to go.

Trousers as before, Cami – Topshop, Jacket – Religion (old), Shoes – Office (old), Bag- Mulberry, Lipstick – Rimmel 107

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend, what did you get up to?

Aesop Primrose Facial Cleansing Mask – Review

Aesop Primrose Facial Cleansing Mask

Aesop Primrose Facial Cleansing Mask

Long term readers of my blog will know my love and loyalty to the Aesop Camilla Nut Face Cream, as I knew I liked both the products and packaging of the brand I was keen to try what else they has to offer. So when my sister gave me the Aesop Primrose Cleansing Facial Mask I was really excited to try it. I always think masks are a good way to test out a brand as they are the only skincare product you can really expect to see immediate results from.

The mask comes in the same beautiful apothecary style glass tub as the Camilla nut face cream, which although look great is a little unpractical once you start getting half way through the tub you really have to dig in! A tube, like the one the more well known parsley seed mask comes in would have been better, but perhaps the clay is too thick to be able to go in a tube.

The product itself looks like a typical greenish clay mask, thick and creamy and smelling very ‘earthy’. On first application it tingles a little, but rather than finding this irritating I actually really enjoy the sensation as it cools and calms my skin. After waiting the allotted ten minutes one of the first things I noticed and one that in my mind really sets this apart from other clay based masks is the fact that even when well and truly ‘set’ it doesn’t feel tight or hard  & uncomfortable on the skin. Once removed with a wet flannel I really get an immediate wow factor, my skin not only feels amazing; smooth and cleansed; but it also looks great. Redness is reduced and pores are less visible. As the mask also contains vitamin e it leaves my skin feeling and looking really hydrated and plump. All in all I thoroughly enjoy using this mask as a weekly treat not only does it deep cleanse and exfoliates but it hydrates as well, once again Aesop has left me wanting to try more of their products.

Do you have any Aesop recommendations for me?

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

To say that the Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser SPF 30/PA+++ has been on my horizon for a while is a pretty big understatement. Since the TM first started generating hype in spring 2012, I’ve been reading every review and swatching it at every Nars counter I’ve come across. So why has it taken me so long to bit the bullet and part with my money for it? Two reasons; firstly the colour match I’ve tried Nars Sheer Glow and their concealers in the past and have never been able to find a shade that suited me. They were all too dark, too porcelain or far far too yellow-toned. The second was my love for both the Laura Mercier TM and the Becca Sheer Skin Perfecter. I have always had a tube of both in my collection and I could never justify spending almost £30 on another TM. So, when my latest tube of Laura Mercier TM bit the dust, and with a new shade, Terre Neuvea light pink toned colour realised I skipped to my nearest Space NK to test it out.

Firstly, to my surprise, I was actually colour matched to the now second lightest shade in the range Finland as Terre Neuvea turned out to be a tad too light for me. Despite it being a bit more yellow toned then I normally go for, it works and I think it will keep working for me going into summer. So is the NPRTM worth the hype? In my eyes, yes, for the most part. First off it’s a lot thicker in consistency then other TMs I have owned, which I like as it’s easier to blend with a brush (my application method of choice). In terms of coverage it’s good, a lot better than the Laura Mercier for example, I don’t feel the need to amp it up round my red nose with extra concealer. It evened out my skintone whilst letting my freckles show through, it wouldn’t cover any angry red spots, but I would prefer to target them with a concealer anyway so that is not a problem for me. The finish is a lot less ‘wet’ feeling than other TMs I have tried, less dewy and more of a satin, skin-like finish, which I found strange given the word ‘radiant’ in the name. Personally, I don’t feel the need to powder this until around late afternoon where I can get a bit ‘glowy’ round my nose. It did cling to some dry patches around my temples but nothing too noticeable. Lastly, the main draw that will keep me wearing this all summer is the SPF 30/PA+++. As a redhead with fair skin, sun-care is important to me and the fact that I know I can slap this on in the morning and my sun-care is taken care of does give me peace of mind, although please bear in mind I live in the UK and it never gets that hot! I would still recommend adding a separate factor 50 in your routine when going on holiday or if you live in sunnier climate. All in all I really like this tinted moisturiser, it lasts well throughout the day keeps my skin look natural and not too made up and provides good coverage.

Easter Baking – Cherry & Almond Cake

Cherry & Almond Cake

Cherry & Almond Cake

This Cherry & Almond cake is an old favourite of mine to whip up when the whole family is together, it’s a bit more impressive sounding/tasting then a Victoria sponge but just as easy to bake. If you’re a fan of the marzipan flavour Cherry Bakewell tarts you will love this.
First of all you will need:Cherry=&-Almond-Cake-Ingredients

200g unsalted butter
200g caster sugar
1 tsp almond extract
175g self raising flour
85g ground almonds
1/2tsp baking powder
300g glace cherries
A large splash of whole milk
Two small handfuls of flaked almonds

Start by beating together the sugar and butter till its nice and smooth, a lot of arm power is required here! Once it’s all nice and fluffy add the eggs one by one beating them into the mixture as you go along.

Then add the almond extract, depending on how ‘marzipany’ you want the batter to be either add in half or a whole tablespoon, I like to put in a whole one. Once the eggs & almond extract are beaten in the mixture will look very runny. You now need to add in all the ‘dry’ ingredients so sieve in the flour and baking powder then fold them in along with the ground almonds into the batter.

Remember a tidy kitchen is an efficient kitchen!

After all the ingredients are combined its time to add in the cherries and the milk stirring thoroughly.

Grease your cake tin and add the batter, scatter the flaked almonds on top and  place the tin in a low temp oven, gas mark 3 or 4 for around an hour.

Remember all this cake baking is hard work so make sure you have some helpers in the kitchen.

Inevitably, all the cherries will sink to the bottom when the cake is rising in the oven so take extra care when removing from the cake tin. You should have something that looks a little like this:

Remember to lick the bowl!

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend!

Empties #3

I haven’t done an empties post in ages! But since they are some of my personal favourite to read and watch I thought I would jump back on the bandwagon and try to roll them out a little more regularly. I think any beauty junkie knows & loves that satisfying feeling of using a product down to its very last drop if anything it proves you’re not wasting money.

Hair: Avalon Organics Scalp Treatment Shampoo, I suffer from pretty bad eczema on my scalp and hair line, so I’m always looking for a natural shampoo that could be my ‘miracle cure’. This shampoo is 75% organic and contains tea tree oil to help heal the scalp. Whilst this shampoo didn’t irate my scalp further in any way and lathered up nicely it didn’t cure my itchy scalp and left my hair feeling very dry out so I won’t be repurchasing. Lush Superbalm Scalp Treatment,  another product aimed at solving my scalp issues sorry! I was talked into buying this when I was crusing a lash shop in a train station ages ago. I think it’s actually aimed at people trying to remove product build-up rather than for treating irritated scalps which is how it was sold to me. So verdict? Sorry Lush I HATED this eugh what a waste of money. You rub this onto your dry scalp before shampooing and then after waiting for however long wash it out. Well let me tell you it took me five goes over three days to wash this sucker out!! What a nightmare, never again.  Lastly I have the VO5 Plump Me Up Dry Shampoo, this is a great dry shampoo adds volume and texture without feeling sticky or leaving tell tale white patches. This and the John Freda volume one are my favs and have gone through multiple bottles of both. A re-purchase for sure.

Body & Hands: Boujois Nail Remover Pot, I was pretty late to jump on this bandwagon but I’m so glad I did. I can’t imagine ever removing my nail polish the old fashion way again! Already got another one waiting. & Other Stories Fig Fiction Body Scrub, this was a really nice body scrub it was very ‘grity’ which I like but also soaped up so you didn’t need to use a separate body wash. The scent was ok very fresh. I know a lot of people love the smell of fig but I got a bit sick of it towards the end. I don’t know if/when I’d buy this again its only really available from their store on regent st so perhaps when I’m next there I’ll try another scent. Body Shop Atlas Mountain Rose Body Butter, like most people I love the Body Shop body butters so hydrating and thick yet they sink in really fast, I love rose so this was a no brainer its a light rose to not too granny I pick up a couple in different scents every time they have a sale on which seems to be always! Radox Sleep Easy Bath Soak, not a lot to say about this cheap and cheerful lavender scented bubble bath, did the job and was nice to treat myself to a relaxing bath at the end of the day. I’d pick it up again if I saw it.

Make-up: Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara, this was my first time using this mascara and I’ve really enjoyed it, I love the control the small skinny brush gave me yet still produced good volume and length. I preferred it when it had dried up a little the only downside was it did smudge on my lower lashes so if you have problems with mascara transferring this one may not be for you. Estee Lauder Sumptuous Extreme Mascara, This was kind of the opposite to the Rimmel Mascara, it has a huge brush and I found it really difficult to use on my hooded eyes without getting it everywhere! It did however give amazing results my lashes looked almost false. I wouldn’t personally pick this up but if you are more skilled in wielding big wands (snigger) then I would thoroughly recommend this mascara.

Skincare: Laball Eua De Rose, This was just a rosewater toner picked up in a French pharmacy was lovely and refreshing to use in the morning I might try the Lush rosewater toner to replace it. Dr Nick Lowe Neck & Décolleté Firming Cream* not really sure what to say about this I certainly didn’t notice any firming going on but then I am in my 20s and hopefully there isn’t too much sagging going on yet! To be honest I really can’t see how this is any better than bringing your face cream down or your body lotion up, if you are worried about those areas just remember to wear sunscreen! Antipodes Avocado Night Cream, I’ve already sung this night creams praises here so I wont go on about it too much except to say I really liked it but after finishing it fancied trying something new so bought a Neil’s Yard night cream which I promise to review soon. REN Vita Mineral EyeGel, I’ve actually gone through a few of these REN eye gel samples and whilst I do enjoying the cooling sensation in the morning I haven’t been impressed enough to part with my money. I would however like to try a roller ball eye cream for the morning so if you have any suggestions send them my way.

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know what you thought if you did.

New In: Nike Air Max 90s

Being a huge trainer girl I’ve wanted a pair of Nike Air Max’s for around a year now but was always too worried they would make my size six feet look gigantic and clunky. How wrong I was! Not only did I have to go a whole size down for these bad boys to a size five, the heavy setting of the shoe makes my legs look super skinny in comparison. Am loving these with jeans and leather jackets in the day atm and can’t wait till it finally warms up a bit to rock these with my levis denim shorts and a cute crop top for summer nights out. What do you think? Love them or loath them? I personally can’t get enough of the flat vs heels trend.

I got mine here

March Favourites

March was a month of switching up my skincare and make-up into a more spring friendly zone, I swapped mattifying foundations for tinted moisturisers and powders and lipsticks for creams and glosses. I’ve also been trying to get my body ready to bare! And introduce some brighter fun colours into rotation.

EcoTools Sheer Finish Kabuki: I picked this brush up during the boots 3 for 2 promotion at the beginning of the month when I needed a third product to make use of the deal. I’m so glad I did as this has proved to be one of the best beauty purchases I’ve made in months. Being very fair I struggle to wear bronzer during the day as it can look harsh and stripy very easily. However this loose duo fiber brush picks up the perfect amount of product and blending it seamlessly over my face down to my neck. As it’s so large I can’t really ‘contour’ with it, instead I simply swipe my bronzer over cheeks, temples and forehead always making sure to blend down my neck, giving me the perfect amount of colour.

Essie Trophy Wife: I have a whole post dedicated to this beautiful mermaid teal shade here, so I shant whittle on about it too much. Anyway anyone who reads my blog regularly will know that a post dedicated to a single nail polish is a very rare thing! I have also removed and reapplied this polish twice this month another anomaly for me, I’ve even had several compliments whilst wearing it! A winner all round.

MAC Creamblend Blush in Ladyblush & CCB in Hush.

MAC Creamblend Blush in Ladyblush & CCB in Hush.

MAC Creamblend blush in Ladyblush & Cream Colour Base in Hush: There is always something about the warmer weather that makes me want to switch from foundations and powders to tinted moisturisers and cream cheek products. Nothing gives my cheeks a natural glowing flush like these two babies from MAC. Ladyblush is a warm neutral pinky-peach and blends into my skin beautifully, topped with CCB in Hush which is a pink based highlighter they give the appearance of healthy lit from within look. I find blending with fingers gives the best finish.

Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish: As reported in last month’s favorites my skin has been having issues recently, dry patches and dehydration mainly, so I wanted to take my skincare back to basics. Enter old faithful Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish, seriously does this stuff ever let anyone down? I’ve tried many ‘dupes’ of this but none compare to the real deal baby. Thick, creamy, goodness taking off all my face and eye make-up in one go. Its non irritating, hydrating and gets the job done. Don’t know why I ever strayed.

L’Occitane Almond Shower Oil: This is another old love that I have reintroduced into my arsenal.  With summer coming up (it is I promise!) I needed to start getting my (body) skin into shape and nothing makes my skin as soft as this sweet smelling shower oil. It is also incredible to use when shaving legs which is slightly extravagant but well worth it.

What have you been loving in the month of March?
